A recent study by Neuralstem, Inc. shows that the company’s neural stem cells (NSI-566) induced the regeneration of spinal cord axons and promoted locomotor recovery in lab rats. Typically, nerve connections below the point of injury die, causing paralysis. However, according to sacbee.com, when scientists injected neural stem cells NSI-566 into the injured area, the cells bridged the gap between gray matter motor neurons for many spinal cord segments below the injury.

Study With Lab Rats

The study included 12 rats, all of which underwent complete spinal transections at vertebrae T3. Seven days after the injury, six of the subjects received transplants of Neuralstem spinal cord stem cell (NSI-566). This group was observed and compared to the other six subjects, who had not received transplants so that they would conform the control group. The rats that received the transplants showed considerable locomotor recovery as they regained movement in all lower extremity joints. Moreover, most of the grafted cells (57 percent), turned into neurons from which an important number of axons emerged both above and below the point of injury.

Successful Regeneration of Damaged Tissue

According to Karl Johe, PhD, Chairman of Neuralstem’s Board of Directors and Chief Scientific Officer: “the fact is that our neural stem cells are capable of regenerating injured spinal cord axons which subsequently serve as a bridge to reconnect to gray matter motor neurons for many spinal cord segments below the injury. Our cells built a bridge that received inputs from regenerating rat axons above the injury. They also sent out new human axons which made new synaptic connections with the host motor neurons in the gray matter below the injury. The fact that these cells induce regeneration of axons and partial recovery of motor function makes them relevant for testing for the treatment of human spinal cord injury.”

Expensive Treatments

Unfortunately, these treatments are not cheap. If the injuries were caused in an accident for which someone else was responsible, maybe we can help. The Lawyers of Greenberg, Stone & Urbano, may be able to help the victims of spinal cord injuries caused by someone else’s negligent actions recover money to help pay for their treatment, including rehabilitation therapy, for their daily expenses, for their pain and suffering and for their lost wages.
