A teen died and five others were injured when 13 foot boat crashed into a bridge in Wilton Manors. The boating accident occurred around midnight when a boat holding six teens slammed into a bridge. Witnesses report that the teens were traveling at a high rate of speed and likely could not stop in time. Authorities arrived at the scene of the accident to uncover the boat wedged under the low lying bridge that also had several drains going across it. One of the teens was killed in the accident, while five were injured. All accident victims are under the age of 18.
Witnesses have stated that there are no lights around the area of the bridge at night and it is likely the teens never saw it coming. The high school senior that perished in the accident was well known for his love of fishing and boating. At least one of the injured teens will face a long road to recovery as he fractured his spine, along with other injuries. Two others were listed as in critical condition.
Residents have expressed concerns about the bridge and many felt an accident was bound to eventually occur there. The bridge has many drainage tubes coming out of it and crossing the river. Unless tides are very low, boats will not pass under it. There are no lights and no warning signs placed by the bridge besides a “no wake” zone sign.
The Causes of Boat Accidents
There are several common causes of boat accidents. Many are the result of negligence or recklessness on the part of the boat operator. Passengers injured due to the actions of the boat operator may have a viable cause of action against them. At times, boat operators may be eligible for compensation from an outside party. Fault for the accident will depend upon its cause. As such, some of the top reasons for boat accidents include:
- Inexperienced boat operators
- Distracted boat operators
- Improper or insufficient look out
- Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Rough waters
- Weather conditions
- Failure to adhere to navigation rules
- High waves or wakes
- Poor lighting
- Unsafe waterways
If you were involved in a boat accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and damages associated with the accident. This could include coverage for medical expenses, lost wages, damage to the boat, pain and suffering, and more. Consult with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible after the accident to uncover whether you may have a viable action against the operator, vessel manufacturer, owner of the waterway, or more.
