The University of South Florida is conducting important research into the use of hyperbaric chamber to cure traumatic brain injuries. This is the same type of chamber used by deep sea divers to avoid getting decompression sickness (DCS; also known as divers’ disease or the bends) which is a condition that occurs when decompression causes dissolved gases to become bubbles inside the human body.
According to tbo.com, patients are inserted into hyperbaric chambers so that they can breath oxygen at high pressures, which pushes the oxygen into the blood stream and tissues, allowing it to reach places it could not otherwise. This oxygen rich environment allows for stem cells already existing in the brain or brought there by other innovative mechanisms, to better transform into brain cells and replace those killed by the injury.
Traumatic Brain Injury is a Complicated Process
The process that follows a traumatic brain injury is complicated and can turn into a vicious circle that eventually leads to the patient’s death if doctors don’t stop it. The brain cells at the point of impact die as a result of the blow. These dead cells release toxic chemicals that cause the brain to swell. As the brain swells within the confines of the skull, the veins and arteries that bring blood to the head are compressed, causing the flow of essential oxygen to stop. The lack of oxygen kills more cells, which in turn release more toxic chemicals. If doctors don’t stop the cycle from repeating itself, the patient eventually dies.
When combined with other techniques that we have discussed in previous posts (like the negative vacuum pump used to extract the toxic chemicals), the hyperbaric chamber helps bring oxygen to more cells than breathing in a normal pressure environment could, expediting and improving the patient’s recovery.
