According to marketwatch.com, RegeneRx Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., has tested a new drug on rats in a lab environment, Thymosin Beta 4 (TB4), that has reduced brain damage and improved functional recovery when applied immediately (6 hours) after a traumatic brain injury.
Deadly Brain Swelling
As discussed in previous posts, the swelling of the brain that follows a traumatic injury to the head is the leading cause of death for TBI patients. In a nutshell, brain cells at the point of impact die as do cells affected by the movement of the brain. As they die, the cells release toxic chemicals that cause the brain to swell. The swelling of the brain within the confines of the skull compress the arteries and veins that bring blood to the head, stopping the flow of blood and the oxygen it carries within it. This lack of oxygen kills more brain cells. If doctors don’t do something to stop the cycle from repeating itself, the patient dies or sustains severe permanent brain damage. However, breaking the preceding deadly cycle is only part of the battle. Scientists then have to find other treatments (some based on drugs, others not) to help the patient regain the different body functions affected by the injury.
And that’s where drugs like TB4 come into action. A treatment with TB4 initiated within 6 hours after an injury considerably improved sensorimotor functional recovery and spatial learning, reduced cortical lesion volume and hippocampal cell loss, additionally enhancing cell proliferation and neurogenesis in the injured hippocampus. In essence, the tests performed showed that TB4 treatment initiated 6 hours post-injury provided both neuro-protection and neuro-restoration after a traumatic brain injury. These results give TB4 a promising therapeutic potential for patients suffering traumatic brain injuries.
Dr. Allan Goldstein, Professor and Chairman Emeritus, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, D.C., stated regarding these clinical trials with TB4: “these results are extremely encouraging and are consistent with results of TB4 administration in other Central Nervous System injuries, as well as in cardiovascular injury models. The resulting reduction of brain damage, improved motor function, and regeneration of injured brain tissue suggest that it could potentially be useful for the treatment of brain traumas seen in the military, the workplace, contact sports and motor vehicle accident victims.
