According to a study cited by USA Today, the Orlando – Kissimmee metro area is the deadliest metro area for pedestrians in the United States with 550 pedestrians killed in the last decade alone.
Four Other Florida Cities Top The List
The study by Transportation for America, a safety advocacy coalition, only included cities with more than one million inhabitants. Florida was the State with more cities on the list with Tampa – St. Petersburg – Clearwater as number 2; Jacksonville as number 3 and Miami – Ft. Lauderdale – Pompano Beach as number 4.
Nonetheless, Number of Pedestrian Accidents is Down
In spite of finding that more than 47,700 pedestrians died in accidents during the past 10 years and more than 688,000 were injured nationwide, the study shows a drop of 14% in the number of pedestrian fatalities.
Should Not Be Called Accidents
James Corless, Director of Transportation for America, says that these should not be called “accidents” because they are fully preventable. According to the study, while many of America’s roads are built so as to facilitate the transportation of large quantities of vehicles, they are not always built and, especially, maintained with pedestrian safety in mind. Poor maintenance or failure by the government to warn of a known danger result in dangerous roads.
Also, Florida’s year round nice weather create the ideal conditions for people to engage in a lot of outdoor activities. The nice weather and the World’s largest parks, make the Orlando – Kissimmee area the largest tourist destination in the country and its numerous busy roads the most dangerous for pedestrians nationwide.
