One More Pedestrian is Run Over in South Florida

Here we go again! Another South Florida pedestrian is struck down by a motor vehicle, this time as he was getting on a public bus.

Elderly Man Hit as He Was Getting on Bus

Although the driver that struck this pedestrian could not drive away in his vehicle, he simply walked off while others helped the victim. The victim was a 91 year old gentleman trying to board a bus. Apparently, the driver lost control of his SUV, went on to the sidewalk and hit the elderly pedestrian. The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Alarming Frequency of Hit and Run Accidents in Miami

The frequency with which these cases are happening is alarming. It’s like there’s an “open hunting season ” on pedestrians in South Florida…At the end of last year a Virginia Tourist was the victim of another hit and run in Miami Beach. A month earlier, another elderly pedestrian was struck down as he stood on a sidewalk on Eight Street and 24th Avenue.

Don’t Wonder Why

For normal South Floridians, an accident is just accident. The person at fault had no intention to cause it. Otherwise, it would have been Assault and Battery…Similarly, because accidents happen, normal South Floridians carry insurance, so that the victims of these unfortunate events can have some measure of redress. And that should be the end of it. There are, however, those among us that despite loving to live in a civilized society, fail to understand the ways of such society…

As stated before, those who run did not intend to cause the accident. Yet, once they run to avoid facing the consequences, their intent to escape qualifies them as criminals. Now, they have to respond not only to civil liability, but to criminal prosecution as well. Now, let’s assume that they somehow manage to escape justice, as difficult as it is to avoid getting caught these days…Can they “escape” their own conscience? A message for those who respond yes: next time you are the victim of some form of social injustice, don’t try to look for the answer to your misfortune in a book, just look in a mirror….
