Another Boat Accident in Miami

March 26, 2011

Three people in a fishing boat that collided with a speed boat last Friday off the MacArthur Causeway were injured and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.

Boating Accidents Common in Florida

The Sunshine State, with it's warm climate and beautiful beaches, is an ideal place for all sorts of water activities: boat and jet ski riding, water skiing, tubing, kayaking, parasailing, etc. However, often times, when these activities are carried out without adequate care the result is injury, pain, suffering and even death, instead of enjoyment. As recently stated by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Agency spokesman when talking about two separate incidents: "We're the boating capital of the world so we're also the boating accident capital"...

In one case, a pair of jet skis operated by a husband and wife (with kids as passengers) crashed into one another, sending the wife to a Miami hospital with bone fractures and a major hand injury.

New York Tour Bus Crash Raises Concerns Over Driver Fatigue

March 15, 2011

The deadly weekend tour bus crash that killed 15 passengers in New York is raising concerns over fatigue affecting drivers of buses and tractor -trailers, according to an article on FairWarning.org.

Driver Claims Bus Sideswiped By Eighteen Wheeler

The bus was returning to New York City with a group that had visited a Connecticut casino when it crashed early last Saturday morning. The driver, Ophadell Williams, told police that the bus had been sideswiped by a big tractor trailer. However, State police said that another driver who had been following the bus that morning told them he had seen the bus weaving in and out of traffic, which makes authorities suspect that Mr. Williams may have dozed off while at the wheel. Similarly, bus passengers have claimed that the bus driver fell asleep several times before the accident. Regardless, the investigation continues and authorities are looking into the information contained in the bus' "black box", according to an article in AllMediaNY.

Rehab For Brain Injuries is Expensive and Rarely Covered By Insurance

March 2, 2011

It may come as a surprise to many, but insurance companies will rarely cover the kind of rehabilitation necessary to recover from brain injuries similar to those recently suffered by U.S. Representative Gabriel Giffords. Such was the case of Scott Hamilton, who was involved in a motorcycle accident a few years ago in San Francisco. According to a USA Today article, intensive rehabilitation like that now provided to Rep. Giffords, is often not covered by insurance companies.

She is one of the "lucky ones" - according to the article - because being a federal employee injured on the job, the Federal Employee's Compensation Act covers her rehab for as long as needed.

Luckily for Scott, at the end his insurance company agreed to pay for his rehabilitation. However, as stated before, most brain injury patients are not as lucky...

Staggering Numbers

About 1.7 million people suffer traumatic brain injuries each year, mostly from motor vehicle accidents, strokes, assaults, falls, gunshot wounds and accidents that happen while engaged in sports activities. On the other hand, the total cost of rehabilitation per patient is on average $162,194.00 for initial brain trauma care and $59,862.00 for two weeks of inpatient rehab. Moreover, outpatient rehabilitation can last for weeks, months or years at a cost between $600.00 and $1,000.00 a day...
